Athlete: Bobby McCarther

I guess I will start from the beginning. I was born in Spokane Washington. After moving around a lot during my elementary school years we settled down in a Redmond Washington where I believe my foundation for life began to build. Not having a father in my early years yielded a lot of skepticism for the man that my mom chose to marry. Little did I know that my new dad Lawrence would quickly turn into my hero and role model. My dad is solely responsible for the way I train, my work ethic, my no quit attitude and my relentlessness to get the job done. To this day, I still ask my dad for workout advice and realize how blessed I am to have such a great role model.

I now have a 6 year old son and I strive to be the best father that I can be. I know how important it is to lead by example and take responsibility for your actions. I know how having a great father can change the outlook and life of a young boy for the better. We do a lot together. From going to RC Car races and racing, to setting up tracks for my son to drift around in his go-cart to reading and talking about history, or who can run faster. Being a dad makes you want to do better and be better.

I have always had a passion for athletics, it started with football. I learned that if you want to be the best you have to train and work like the best. As a child I lifted weights, ran hills, did sprint and agility drills. All with the hope of some day making it to college and the NFL. My dream was to be a receiver like Jerry Rice and return punts and kicks like Deon Sanders. That abruptly ended in high school, due to an aneurism cause by head trauma. The doctors advised that I could no longer play contact sports. With that loss I turned to track. I ended up doing very well and going to the Jr Nationals where I placed 9th in the nation in the triple jump. From there I got a track scholarship to Long Beach City college. At the time they had the best track team in the country. In Long Beach learned what it was really like to train hard and compete.

After my track career ended due to multiple injuries, I turned to fitness and fashion modeling. A good friend of mine told me that I would be perfect for the new division of Men’s Physique. After putting it off for a while I decided to go for it! I trained and trained and trained and ran 5-8 miles a day. I came to my first competition shredded but only about 165lbs and 6ft tall. I won my class and got 2nd overall to a much bigger competitor. I did 5 more shows winning my class every time with the exception of the Las Vegas Jr. Nationals where I wasn’t even looked at. I’ve got to tell you that is the worst feeling and extremely humbling. I have to say that “Miles” shows are different from other local shows or a “National” show. I never feel like I won’t be seen on stage, there is always someone around to help you. At the other shows, it’s all chaos. You end up going to the pump room an hour early just to be ready, and when you finally do go on stage. If you are not first call out you get 0 stage time. I think it is cool how it is done in Arizona!

I set a goal to take the overall in a show before I attempt any other national show. Now about a year and a half later I have hired a dietitian and walked on stage this last time at 183lbs! Not only did I walk off of the stage with the overall! Miles was gracious enough to let me propose to my soul mate on stage! Thank you so much Miles for letting me propose at your awesome event!

My whole life is not purely fitness, I love to indulge in sinful foods like this chocolate cake my fiancé makes for me after every competition! Being with my family and fiancé are the most important things to me. I love to snowboard, wakeboard and I love to watch football and go to comedy shows. I really enjoy photography and hope to start a photography business specializing in children and youth athletics. I just want to thank my fiancé Emily for all of the support and being such an amazing friend and cook J. My son for teaching me so very much and never letting me give up especially during cardio! And to God for being there for all of us!
